Design agency loved GmbH continues its pro bono work for “Clubstiftung Hamburg” (Hamburg club foundation) with an update of the Hamburg Club Lexicon and an auction with all proceeds going to the foundation.
The foundation dedicated to supporting private music venues in Hamburg, known as the “Clubstiftung”, was set up in autumn 2011 by the City of Hamburg and the association of club operators, event organisers, bookers and agencies known as “Clubkombinat Hamburg”. The Clubstiftung’s stated aim is to lend support to Hamburg’s live music clubs with what can sometimes be quite substantial capital outlay. The foundation was provided with start-up capital of 376,000 euros from public funds. To date (November 2014), around 170,000 euros have been injected into Hamburg’s clubs. As one of the measures used to draw attention to the Clubstiftung, the Hamburg Club Lexicon was brought into being by Hamburg-based design agency loved gmbh, which was responsible for its design and editorial content. The lexicon was first published in the summer of 2012. Sixty-four Hamburg photographers, including such well-known luminaries as Kai-Uwe Gundlach and Uwe Düttmann, photographed 64 of Hamburg’s live music clubs. The lexicon won prestigious design prizes, such as the Red Dot Award and Bronze from the Art Directors Club Germany.
Two years down the road, much has happened on Hamburg’s club scene. China Lounge no longer exists, its premises now home to Molotow, which was forced to permanently relocate because of the demolition of the Esso buildings. Egal Bar, too, is no more, its premises also having been torn down to make way for another building. Stellwerk is threatened with closure. Mojo Club has reopened. Golem represents a new star in Hamburg’s club constellation, featuring a remarkable programme of events. While Jupi Bar has closed for now, it is slated for renovation and should be reopening next year. Cosy Karussell has been whirling in Hamburg’s Eimsbüttel district for almost two years now.
But this is just the tip of the happening iceberg that is Hamburg’s current live music scene. The 16-page Club Lexicon update, once again produced by Clubkombinat and loved gmbh, takes a snapshot of five shifts in the city’s club culture and will in future be available together with the Club Lexicon as a supplement.
What’s more, the images created by photographers Oliver Schwarzwald, Matthias Haslauer and Christian Schildmacher will be auctioned off to the highest bidders among photography and live music fans on 20 November 2014. All proceeds will go to the Clubstiftung. The event is being organised by law firm Rose & Partner LLP, which co-founded the Clubstiftung as legal adviser. As a special highlight, the auction will also include a photo by Danny Wall of The Beatles’ last concert at Hamburg’s Star Club. The photo is being donated by Ulf Krüger from “Center of Beat”. These 24 would-be Christmas gifts will hopefully raise a tidy sum for Hamburg’s Clubstiftung.
